Safety Specialist

 


 

Position Summary

This employee will assist the safety director in the planning, administering, and training of employees concerning environmental, safety, and regulatory compliance policies for Kokomo Grain Co. The employee will conduct daily maintenance of the buildings and equipment at the facility. Manages the flow of grain dumped into the elevator and loaded out into trucks (and rail cars in some sites). Monitors grain in storage and maintains condition with aeration or turning to keep grain in good condition. At times, oversees the weighing and grading of grain before it is dumped into the grain elevator.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supports Kokomo Grain’s stated vision, mission, and business values at all locations with an emphasis on three locations.

  2. Builds a positive working relationships with all levels of management and personnel.

  3. Assists and trains all Kokomo Grain managers, human resources, and team members with safety, environmental, and regulatory issues.

  4. Responds and investigates safety incidents including a 24-hour response when on call.

  5. Works collaboratively with local, state, and federal regulators, and risk management personnel.
  6. Assists with interpreting, developing, and submitting regulatory, environmental, and insurance reports as requested.

  7. Sets safety objectives and targets to ensure that safety goals are achieved.

  8. Responsible for coordinating safety audits at KG facilities and equipment to ensure local, state, and federal regulatory standards.

  9. Participates in safety training and regulatory activities. Including leading companywide safety meetings and facilitating the quarterly safety meetings.

  10. Assumes other duties as assigned.

     

     

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists in performing maintenance work as required.
  2. Performs housekeeping as related, including the cleanliness and orderliness of the grain handling area (tunnels, concrete grounds, grass areas, etc.) as well as areas within the site as delegated by the position supervisor or manager.

  3. Keeps current and maintain all training requirements for this position.
  4. Wear proper PPE, including a safety harness if off the ground or on a train. Reminds others as needed.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from four-year college or university; or 4 years or more related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred but not required. 

 

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to draft routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

 

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty pounds. Employee must be willing to perform inspections or rescue work at heights of grain silos and basements of facilities. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
